 Brown Bag Seminar: Play Therapy with Asian Children
Date: Wednesday, February 28, 2007
Description: If we wish to understand our child, we need to understand his/her play. Helping professionals hone their skills for working with diverse children and families, this unique brown bag seminar looks at play therapy through a multicultural lens. Presented by Dr. Monit Cheung, the seminar will guide the audience through the dynamics of play therapy and provide an opportunity for practitioners to examine how to transcend cultural differences in their communication with children. Join us for this seminar to explore the cultural implications of play therapy through discussions about the needs of Asian children.

Brown Bag Seminar: Asian American - Issues of Mental Health Utilization, Culture, and Culturally Competent Approaches

Description: It is imperative that healthcare providers, social workers, clinicians and other professionals understand and embrace the importance of building cultural and linguistic competency. Presented by Dr. Quang (Charlie) Nguyen, The seminar provides a framework to help develop a culturally competent workplace and to provide strategies for addressing the concerns and specific needs of Asian immigrants.

  • Healthy Divorce, Healthy Kids Parenting Class

    Description: In Texas, divorcing parents with children under the age of 18 must complete a 4-hour parenting education and family stabilization course. Since 2000, we have helped hundreds of divorcing parents meet their mandated requirements and at the same time gain valuable insight into the process for creating a healthy divorce through our counseling services and court approved courses – Healthy Divorce, Healthy Kids.

Our course covers a wide range of topics including:

  • the emotional effects of divorce on parents
  • the emotional and behavioral reactions to divorce by young children and adolescents
  • parenting issues relating to the concerns and needs of children at different development stages
  • stress indicators in young children and adolescents
  • conflict management;family stabilization through development of a co-parenting relationship
  • the financial responsibilities of parenting;family violence, spousal abuse, and child abuse and neglect
  • the availability of community services and resources
